Contact the appropriate Pension plan and request an application kit, several months before your anticipated retirement date. Have your SIN number available when you call. Follow the instructions for completing the kit.

Notify the TVDSB with a letter (see Sample Letter #1 and Sample Letter #2) to the Executive Superintendent of Human Resources stating your intent to retire to pension with effective date; copy letter to the District 11 OSSTF Office. (Fax: 659-2421)

  • Include your home address and email address.
  • Human Resources will acknowledge your letter and send information dealing with benefits, gratuities and Severance Plan.

Leaves to retirement can be assessed by requesting a leave from the beginning of a semester until the actual retirement date. This leave request should be used for members retiring at a date other than dates accepted by the Board in Article 7 of the Collective Agreement. The member will need to arrange with the Pension Board to purchase credit for the time on leave.

Long Term Disability premiums DO NOT have to be paid for the last 60 working days before retirement date OR if you have achieved a 64% unreduced service pension (32 years of credit).You are responsible for faxing a copy of your retirement letter and an application form to discontinue LTD coverage ASAP to fax number 1-519-533-0797 or 1-800-396-8231 Attention: Eric Wilson. Termination of Benefits form can be found in the FORMS section. Request must be received by OTIP/RAEO by the 15th of a month for deductions to cease in the following month.

When you are eligible for a Canada Pension Plan pension (age 60 or greater), you may take early CPP.

If you are eligible for a Retirement Gratuity under one of the predecessor boards, it is important that you have a plan for dealing with this money because there could be tax implications if this money is not handled properly.

Members who are due to receive gratuities at the end of this school year/semester should contact an Educators Financial Group representative before the cheque arrives. Educators Financial Group can be reached at 1-800-263-9541.

If you are a member of the College of Teachers, and you do not plan to apply to be on the Occasional Teaching list, or teach in an Ontario publicly funded school or to renew your College of Teachers’ fees, obtain a "Notice of Retirement" form from the Ontario College of Teachers (1-888-534-2222; Fax: 1-416-961-8822) that you have retired as of effective date. Your status on the website will be listed as "retired" rather than "suspended for non-payment of fees".

  • College of Teachers fees are paid per calendar year.

If you are an Elgin Long-Term Service Incentive Plan (LTSIP) member, please contact the District Office for more information.

FYI: Teachers who retire effective June 30th will receive the balance of their salary (July & August) within three weeks of the last day worked (Article 8.7.5b). Pension payments can begin in July.
