Understanding Your Pay Stub

A District 11 OSSTF Teachers' Bargaining Unit Resource Pamphlet

Here are are the explanations for the various lines and categories listed on your pay stub. Pay stubs are accessible from the Employee Portal by clicking on "View My Pay History". It is possible to access your pay stub approximately a week prior to the actual pay date as well as your pay stubs for previous pay periods.

 

Pay Date
  • The date that the cheque is direct deposited.
Pay Number
  • The number of pays received so far in the school year. For example 200510 means the 10th pay in the 2005-2006 school year.
  • Article 10 of the contract lists the pay dates and describes salary administration.
Id Number
  • Your personal employee number with the Thames Valley District School Board.
Employee Group
  • The bargaining unit to which you belong ("Secondary Teachers").
  • Pay is determined according to the Secondary Teachers' contract.
Regular Pay
  • The earnings for this pay period according to the salary grid in Article 9.
  • Annual salaries for Teachers teaching an entire school year shall be paid in twenty-six (26) installments, commencing on the first Friday of September, all of which shall be one twenty-sixth (1/26) of the annual salary. Notwithstanding the above, when a calendar year contains 53 Fridays and the 53rd Friday is a pay date, there shall be twenty-seven (27) installments all of which shall be one twenty-seventh (1/27) of the annual salary. Teachers teaching less than an entire year will have adjustments made to their salary installments such that they receive pro rata salary based on the percent of the school year for which salary is earned. (Article 10.1.2)
    • Annual salaries for Teachers reducing their teaching time effectively September 01 in accordance with Article 36.2 shall be paid in twenty-six (26) installments, commencing on the first Friday of September, all of which shall be one twenty-sixth (1/26) of the annual salary. (Article 10.1.2.1)
    • Annual salaries for part-time Teachers teaching an entire school year shall be paid in twenty-six (26) installments commencing on the first Friday in September on a pro rata salary based on the semestered full-time equivalency (FTE). (Article 10.1.2.2)
Retroactive Pay
  • If applicable, retroactive pay.
Department Head
  • If applicable, Department Head Allowance (contract Article 9.2.2)
Total Earnings
  • Total earnings on this cheque before deductions.

Deductions:

Employment Insurance
  • 1.8% of insurable earnings (maximum of $40,000) up to a maximum of $720.00 deducted for the 2007 calendar year. Once that maximum has been reached, no further deductions are made in the calendar year.
  • 2007 EI Deduction Table
Canada Pension
  • 4.95% of pensionable earnings (maximum of $43,700) up to a maximum $1989.90 deducted for the 2007 calendar year. Once that maximum has been reached, no further deductions are made in the calendar year.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment
  • 90% of premium cost paid by Board and 10% by employee* (pro-rated for part-time teachers)
  • Benefits premium rate sheet is available on the Employee Portal (click on "View My Benefits" and then "Human Resource Services-Employee Benefits")
Dental Insurance
  • Single or Family coverage
  • 90% of premium cost paid by Board and 10% by employee* (pro-rated for part-time teachers)
  • Benefits premium rate sheet is available on the Employee Portal (click on "View My Benefits" and then "Human Resource Services-Employee Benefits")
Basic Group Life
  • Mandatory coverage of 2.5 x annual salary
  • 85% of premium cost paid by Board and 15% by employee* (pro-rated for part-time teachers)
  • Benefits premium rate sheet is available on the Employee Portal (click on "View My Benefits" and then "Human Resource Services-Employee Benefits")
Health Insurance
  • Single or Family coverage
  • 90% of premium cost paid by Board and 10% by employee* (pro-rated for part-time teachers)
  • Benefits premium rate sheet is available on the Employee Portal (click on "View My Benefits" and then "Human Resource Services-Employee Benefits")
Long Term Disability
  • premium cost is 100% paid by employee*
  • Information about the LTD, including the policy and fact sheets, is available from OTIP's Online Benefits website. Contact the District Office for the username and password.
Optional Group Life
  • Optional Group life of up to an additional 1.5 x annual salary (in thousands) selected, up to a maximum benefit of $425,000
  • premium cost is 100% paid by employee.*
  • Spousal/dependent life insurance - separate rates and 100% paid by employee.
  • Benefits premium rate sheet is available on the Employee Portal (click on "View My Benefits" and then "Human Resource Services-Employee Benefits")
Canada Payroll Savings Deduction
  • Optional, as determined by employee*
Ontario College of Teachers Fee
  • 2005 fee of $104.00 deducted from the second January pay if you are a contract employee
  • If you are on leave, and won't be getting a pay cheque in January you must pay the fee yourself. Click here for more information.

Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Levy
Family Support
  • If applicable, as required by legislation.
Garnishee
  • If applicable, as required by legislation.
Gift Fund
  • As determined by employee.
Credit Union
  • As determined by employee*
Total Deductions
  • Total deductions for this pay period.
Net Deposit
  • Total deposit for this pay period (Total Earnings minus Total Deductions).
Annual Salary
  • Your annual salary as determined by your placement on the grid plus any applicable allowance(s).
Taxable Benefits this pay
  • The board's share of the Basic Group Life premium is a taxable benefit.

* When there are three bi-weekly pays in a single month, deductions will not occur for LTD, Group Life, Health, Dental, Optional Group Life, Canada Payroll Savings, Credit Union, etc on the third pay cheque of the month.
